For my 40th bday, I released this mix - the Next chapter in the Original Series, we now present to you original5. Exploring the musical DNA of the songs we love, by connecting the original samples that were used to make the music. Mixed with that Neil Armstrong aesthetic you have come to expect.

This series has been sold out from the first run for more then 7 years now, but I am repressing a limited run of 500 pieces to represent my 50th birthday.

from the linear notes from 10 years ago:

What you hold in your hands is the 5th chapter in the series , Original5 . As my birthday rolls around I see it fitting to go back to the thing that started it all.  I've presented this new mix  to you via USB, but in the familiar shape of those cassette tapes that I loved picking up when I was a young buck . Digital meets analog, the past moves the future.

To me, this is a Hip Hop Mixtape. But what does that mean? ... Pick up the mix to find out ;)

With every order you will also get automatic Digital DL of the mixtape to tie you over while USPS does the shipping thing.

The Next chapter in the Original Series, we now present to you original5. Exploring the musical DNA of the songs we love, by connecting the original samples that were used to make the music. Mixed with that Neil Armstrong aesthetic you have come to expect.

From the Liner Notes :

This year I am turning the big Four, Zero.

So for 40 years I've loved music, and for 15 of those years I've been lucky to say that I've had a career being a DJ, one of the chosen few who can make a living solely from the love of music. Call me lucky, call me blessed, call me someone who worked really hard to make it happen. Its all true. And the turning point in my career came about because of a mixtape I made called Original.

To me, this is a Hip Hop Mixtape. But what does that mean?

The definition of hip hop... that's something that's constantly changing and evolving. Africa Bambataa's  Planet Rock sounds nothing like A Tribe called Quest's Award Tour, which sounds nothing like Jay-z's Tom Ford, which sounds nothing like Pitbull's fist pumping party madness. But whether or not you want to accept it, it's all Hip Hop.

And very often the common thread that connects all these sub genres is the use of the art of sampling. There are of course exceptions to the rule. You have hip hop bands like the Roots, and a lot of producers these days just do straight up original compositions. But for me, finding the original sample of the hip hop songs, the original DNA of the music that I love - that often comes from a place you would least expect - that has always intrigued me. Finding these samples is a thing I will always love to do.

So yet again, this next mixtape returns to that theme. Original Samples, mixed with their Hip Hop Counterparts , drawing that invisible line between rock, soul, reggae, classical , blues, funk, jazz and this music that is called Hip Hop.

All the samples used on this mixtape as always are from original vinyl that I digged for, I'll always show love for the art form of diggin.

Thank y'all for listening to my mixtapes. You've made these last 40 years of breathing so amazing.

I'm gonna leave the tracklist off this to keep everything a surprise, but just head over to the weblink below if you really need to peep it.
