Counting down to the new mixtape by releasing 2 Original for free…

Mid June right around my birthday I’m releasing a new mixtape – Original part 5 . In the meantime to get y’all ready for the release I’m re-releasing the previous chapters in the “Original” mixtape series. Up next – 2 Original.

I believe I made it back in 2001/2002 . It follows the theme of the first mixtape – going back and forth between hip hop songs and the sampled music they originated from. The theme of the mixtape wasn’t anything new, discount but something like this hadn’t been done by a member of the turntablist battle community. Heavy on the scratching, all the original samples came off of real vinyl. These were the days before mp3’s and broadband allowed everyone to have the same music, so making this mixtape required some real digging.

advice on Flickr”>originalxfuturefm-a

There’s a lot to celebrate these days. thefuture.fm has released a preview beta version of their new website for y’all to see, and in about a month, my 40th Bday is coming up.

Instead of getting gifts though, I want to give back to my fans who have made my career what it is, and with the future.fm relaunching, this would be the perfect time to offer Original for free as a way to celebrate new milestone for both myself and the future.fm.

Hear for the first time officially, Original for digital streaming…

Original : Hip Hop songs mixed with their original sample counterparts. made back in 2001, this was the mixtape that started everything for me. It became so popular that it ended up becoming a series , dubbed the “original mixtape series”.

12 years later, i’ve gotten a lot of new fans over the years, and there are many thefuture.fm fans who have not have had the opportunity to hear it. Now is your chance.

Every week leading up to my bday in June I will be releasing another mixtape in the “original” series, so check back for the upcoming month as I open up the rest of my mixtape catalog for the future.fm followers…

How Style Wars helped me make Warmfuzzy and the All Out King mixtape series

After I did the Sweeet Series, clinic I had this bright idea to try to make 6 mixtapes in 6 months. I was going to call it the “All Out King” mixtape series. I did end up making the series, tadalafil but it took me about 7 years to finish.

lf you specialize in one thing,
you really can’t call yourself an all-out king. – min one from style wars

minone

This quote from Min one became the whole idea for the new series. I was going to showcase my range of music knowledge by creating mixtapes of different genres. To be the music equivalent of a graffiti all out king.

And from this quote, Warmfuzzy, Filthy, Extraordinary, Oscillate Wildly, Music For When Nobody’s Looking and Original All Out king were Born. Each mixtape part of the same series BUT of very distinctive genres / subject matter. At that time it wasn’t that common place. You were not going to here De La Soul and the Cure on the same mixtape, unless it was in like a kitchy/campy sort of mash up way. The intent of these mixes was to keep the original integrity of the music and figure out how to connect everything.

First up in this was my valentine’s day mix warm fuzzy. We just gave it an official release via thefuture.fm

Shouts out to Haena Kang who did the artwork for the whole mixtape series.

If you like what you hear now, you can purchase a physical copy of the mix by clicking the “add to cart button” , the perfect gift for a music lover for Feb 14th and everyday.

Smoove – the mixtape that got me known as a “Mash Up” DJ…

The countdown to Valentine’s Day continues, cheap with the official digital streaming release of Smoove via thefuture.fm.

If you’ve been under a rock for the last 13 years and haven’t heard it yet, here it is for your listening pleasure.

This is one of my early mixes where I started incorporating a larger music spectrum . Led Zeppelin all of my love, mixed with the instrumental from Biggie’s One More Chance for example. For a lack of a better label, this got me known as a dreaded “MASH UP” DJ.

I’ve never really liked that term, but I understood. The time was different. So crazy how different things are today. In 2014, some of the grammy’s best performances were “mash-ups”. Like Imagine Dragons x Kendrick Lamar.

The influence of hip hop, of Hip Hop Djing culture on music as a whole is pretty amazing.

The foundation of my career has always been making mixtapes, and I was never able to get them officially online for digital delivery because of the legal issues… until now ;)

I’ve joined thefuture.fm , a digital platform that allows me to not only stream my mixtapes legally, but also gets the artists whose music is on my mixes paid.

From thefuture.fm website –

We built a platform for you to listen to all the best mixes in the world. For you to discover new music. For you to enjoy music non-stop. For you to find high quality music in every genre. We want to give you the most professional DJs; DJs that not only play at the most exclusive events, the best clubs and the biggest festivals around the world, but also up and coming producers scouted from all over the net.

But we didn’t stop there. We also created technology that doesn’t exist anywhere else. Technology that lets you learn what songs you’re listening to, and buy them if you love them. Because we’re streaming only for one reason; so that we can track the songs that get played and pay royalties to the artists who’s music you enjoy.

Helping you find the best music
Promoting the DJs who curate it
Hooking up the artists who made it

That’s what we’re about.

Pretty sweeet huh? ;) And speaking of sweeet, thefuture.fm’s first project with me involves counting down to valentine’s day .
