11/27-28 – I’m up in Iqaluit Canada In support of Movember

Thanksgiving weekend is going on down in the states so while my folk back home are hopefully getting nice and plump, and I’m up north… Waaaayyy up north in iqaluit to help fundraise for Movember.

In this very small community of around 8000 folk, and Movember isn’t just a reason to grow a hipster moustache. The message of addressing men’s health issues are paramount for this area. Mental health issues up in this remote area – including suicide, recipe suicidal behavior and addictions -are major issues for the community up here, especially among the indigenous male innuit youth. There is a huge disparity between those issues up here versus other areas of Canada.

Now despite being a small community, the guys up here have raised over 125,000 CA$ for movember, in part by creating the Movember Cup, a way for local groups in the community to turn the fundraising into a friendly competition, with the end goal of getting more funds for the needed programs and bringing more awareness to the issues and problems.

I’m up here to set off the festivities for the announcement of this year’s Movember winner, to talk to the local high school kids and offer my story, hopefully giving them another perspective on what’s out there in the world for them… And of course, to party with the peoples.

There ain’t no trains to commute up here, and there is like, only a few flights coming in and out of this area everyday, so don’t have a dog sled and an ice boat, you probably assed out.
